The city--and all of its negative influences--is all these kids have ever known...and they think of it as their friend. Now Rey, Korina, Marcus, and Anthony must face the toughest decision of their lives: Is the hope of redemption enough to lure them away from the streets? Combining the action and excitement of a Western with the laughter of a comedy, Set Apart is a poignant coming-of-age drama about true friendship.
Strengths: Richard Roundtree (Shaft) is cast in a refreshingly respectable role that challenges inner-city kids to a higher moral standard and faith in God.
Weaknesses: Christian actors John Scheider (Smallville) and Jennifer O'Neill (Summer of '42) add little presence to the movie. The plot is close to a being a copycat of The Ride (see below), only with a weaker gospel presentation and more predictable outcome.
