After serving 15 years for manslaughter, reformed pastor Armstrong Cane (Ving Rhames) is determined to make amends with the neighborhood he abandoned. Returning to his late father's church, he reaches out to Norris, a young drug dealer on the path to self-destruction. Together the two fight for a forgiven past and a brighter future.
Strengths: Wake up, Hollywood! This movie is proof-positive that the dark side of the inner city can be portrayed without deluging the audience with profanity. A powerful presentation that maintains a grip on the viewer. Ving Rhames' presence throughout is commanding. Those of you who remember Dean McDermott (aka, Constable Turnbull from the 1990 TV series, Due South,) will be impressed by his now contrasting role as a local drug lord). The Gospel message is presented clearly.
Weaknesses: Several ironies are introduced during the closing scenes, some of which are unsatisfying. The movie ends on a positive note with two of the leading characters, but leaves you hanging with others.
